Tracing the Ireland name in our family

There are about 16,700 people currently living in America who have the last name "Ireland." Before I started this research, I guessed that I'd be able to determine that 100-200 of them were related to me. I was wrong. Really wrong. It turns out that the actual number is probably less than 40.

I meet people who share my surname from time to time, and jokingly call them my long-lost cousins. But if we are actually related, the connection is likely more than 300 years in the past.

I'm a member of the seventh generation of my known Ireland ancestors. I know the names of all or almost all of my deceased Ireland relatives over those seven generations, but it's very difficult to track distant living relatives without a personal connection. I'm slowly starting to uncover a few new Ireland cousins, but the possible pool of future cousins is running pretty dry.

If you're one of those missing cousins, I'd love to include you and your family in this chart - and my more complete genealogies. Your privacy will be carefully protected.

My "Ireland" Relatives

This chart lists only my relatives who carry the Ireland name. As a result, little or no detail about female relatives is provided here. They will be discussed extensively in other sections of the genealogy site.

For privacy reasons, I don't include middle names of any living relatives, or any names of minor children.

Robert Ireland, Sr. is the common ancestor of everyone in our family, and is the sole known member of our Generation 1. He and four of his grown sons moved separately to America from Belfast in the early 1800s. His known descendants who carry or carried the Ireland surname are listed here.
